Master Class with the Matt Slocum Trio
OCT 23, 2011
Location: The Artists Quarter
Time: 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m.
“Developing and Personalizing Your Approach as an Artist and Ensemble.”
Award-winning New York jazz drummer and composer Matt Slocum and his trio present a free, interactive master class that focuses on building a successful growth process as a creative artist and band. The first part of the workshop addresses topics that are essential to the jazz artist’s development. While each jazz master has followed a personal path, there are some commonalities worth exploring in the development of almost all of the great players. In a dialogue between participants and ensemble, the workshop examines the process – creating specific goals, practicing in a way that is personally meaningful and leads to progress, and connecting with the music which resonates with you most deeply to guide your musical growth and unique artistic voice. Focus is then placed upon putting these concepts into action.
Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments as selected participants will be invited to play with and for the trio. This is strongly encouraged as it often serves as a catalyst for future musical growth. There is also ample time allotted for Q & A where participants can ask various questions and gain valuable insights. Free, open to the public, high school and college student musicians particularly encouraged to attend. This program is supported by the MetLife Creative Connections Program with cosponsorship from the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education and Twin Cities Jazz Society. The Artists Quarter is located at 408 St Peter Street (off 7th Place) in downtown St. Paul.
