Students enrolling in this workshop should have at least 2 years experience playing their instrument and should have current or recent experience playing in a jazz band through school or in the community. All students (excluding drummers) should have basic command of some major scales and the blues scale. Pianists and guitarists should also be able to play basic major, minor, and dominant seventh chords.

Instructors
Trumpeter Solomon Parham came to the Twin Cities from Detroit, Michigan. He has performed at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra with Delfeayo Marsalis’ Jazz for Kids, “Jazz and Jasmine Meets the Jazz Band,” Wessell Anderson, Eric Gravatt’s Source Code, and at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Artists’ Quarter, Dakota and Jazz Central. Currently, Solomon teaches and directs jazz ensembles at Walker West Music Academy, and was a clinician for the DFJE last year, leading several improvisation workshops.

Guitarist Zacc Harris is one of the busiest bandleaders in the Twin Cities—he leads the Zacc Harris Trio and Quartet, the Atlantis Quartet, Vital Organ, and Monk in Motian. He also is the curator of Jazz at Studio Z and teaches at Hamline University and the Twin Cities Jazz Workshop. Zacc has played often at the Artists’ Quarter, Dakota, Icehouse, Union, Riverview Wine Bar and more.
