Celebrating Youth Jazz | DFJE Fundraiser Jan. 13th
JAN 13, 2015
Location: The Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant
Time: 5:00 Doors
We’d like to take a moment to recap some of the jazz experiences gained by Minnesota youth this year, and invite you to join us for Celebrating Youth Jazz, a DFJE showcase featuring the Dakota Combo at the Dakota Jazz Club.
Music by The Dakota Combo and an All-Star Band featuring musicians that we send into schools to work with students. — Kevin Washington, drums, Mary Louise Knutson, piano; Solomon Parham, trumpet; Jeff Bailey, bass.
This year, Minnesota youth experienced the many benefits of jazz through:
Access to Jazz Education. Working jazz musicians visited schools to present to over 600 students, and to conduct multi-session workshops for about 250 young musicians. DFJE also conducted free, metro-wide workshops on improvisation, African rhythms, and vocal jazz, plus a piano workshop with nationally recognized artist Lynne Arriale.
Public Performance Opportunities. Last June, DFJE sponsored the Prince Street Stage at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, where six bands, totaling over 50 young musicians, played for hundreds of audience members.
Continuing Studies for Young Musicians. Again in 2014, DFJE awarded scholarships to eight young musicians to study as an ensemble, the Dakota Combo. Under the direction of professional bassist Adam Linz, the Combo rehearsed at the MacPhail Center for Music, performed at a number of public venues and schools and recorded a CD. Additionally, DFJE supported a number of students’ studies through five scholarships for area jazz camps.
